Today (Thursday, 8 January) a new independent non-political party launches in Wells. It is part of a trend across Somerset. People have become disillusioned with party politics.
The mainstream parties can deal with the national politics but they have no place at a local level, where party politics just get in the way of local needs. At city, town or parish council level it should be all about passion for the place you live, listening to what local people want, and a can-do attitude.
Frome Town Council is already run by independents. An independence movement has begun in Glastonbury and Street. There is also a move to persuade some Mendip district councillors to forsake their political party affiliations and stand as independents. Now Wells Independents have launched to run for city council seats on 7 May, 2015.
Wells Independents (WIN) seek to bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm and energy to the council and boost its influence in the region. The launch marks the start of an appeal for more residents and business people to come forward and support the campaign against party politics in local government.
Confirmed candidate Louis Agabani said: “We will press hard to speed the arrival of superfast broadband to Wells and bring free wifi across the shopping centre.”
Confirmed candidate Philip Welch added: “We will listen to the people of Wells and do all we can answer their needs with none of the pathetic point-scoring of party politics.”
The first public meetings for residents to find out more, show support and hear what independents can achieve will take place on Wednesday, 4 February at 7pm and Saturday, 7 February at 2pm at the Seager Hall, Union Street, Wells.
